The
Purpose of Boat Lifts
When an investment is made in a new boat or other
personal watercraft, it is important that the boat is equipped with the
proper equipment and accessories. After all, you want to keep your
watercraft in optimum condition in order to protect your investment so
that it will not only give you years of pleasure, but also so that you
an obtain the maximum resale value possible. For these reasons, boat
lifts are a very important investment in your boating equipment.
Boat lifts are generally constructed of aluminum and are designed to
lift your boat or other personal watercraft up and out of the water.
Boat lifts are available in various types and sizes, and you should have
no trouble finding one to meet your needs.
Some boat lift manufacturers have different lifts in order to
accommodate the various types of watercraft. The lifts may be
specifically designed as floating or standing, or lifts for personal
watercraft. There may also be different lifts for residential or
commercial purposes or lifts for floating dock systems, fixed piers or
seawells.
Boats may be stored in various depths of water as well as in freshwater
or saltwater. It is necessary to store the boats up out of the water to
protect them from algae and other plant growth that can harm the bottom
of the boat. It is also beneficial to have the boat out of the water if
it is not going to be used for a period of time in order to protect it
from passing boats and storms. By protecting your boat from the elements
and other obstacles, your investment will be protected as well.
Some people, even within the boat industry, are under the impression
that only small boats should be kept on boat lifts. This is certainly
not the case, as boat lifts available nowadays can handle boats that
weigh more than 100,000 pounds.
Aluminum is the preferred choice of manufacturers in the construction of
boat lifts, although they may be made of galvanized steel also. In fact,
some manufacturers utilize both elements in building their boat lifts,
as there are different benefits with both materials.
For example some manufacturers find that boat lifts constructed of
aluminum work better in shallow water. Other benefits of aluminum
include that it is lightweight, thereby making it easier to handle and
requires less maintenance.
Some boat lifts are constructed with full length "cradles" so that the
boat will be held in place on the lift. This may be done by bolting lift
elements at various places in order to prevent excess stress. This may
also provide easier lifting of the boat, as well as less wear on the
boat.
Keeping your boat on a lift not only reduces maintenance of the boat,
but it keeps your boat safe from vandalism and thievery.
